Obituary For Lorena Donguines

It is with mixed feelings that we say farewell to Lorena De Asis Donguines. The woman who lived larger than life, who insisted we call her Granny, passed away to her rest in the early hours of July 21 in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada.

She was born next to last of seven children to Narciso and Loreta Donguines (De Asis) in Iloilo, Philippines. Moreover, the only girl (after her eldest sibling passed away), she was destined to be a tomboy princess who wanted to tag along with her older brothers. A fall from a tree that she wasn't supposed to climb and chronic asthma limited her activity but not her ambitions.

Classmates at Central Philippine University in Iloilo still remember the smart and pretty girl who preferred laughter, fashionable clothes, and drama to her studies.

In 1970 she married Galvin Edwin in Baguio, Philippines. This new chapter brought two new children, emigration to Canada, and one last child in this new culture far from home.

Our mother was a complicated person who lived by her own rules and own style. Lorena was at her best when she focused on her creativity. Over the years she taught herself how to cook, bake, preserve food, grow a garden, sew, knit, and crochet. Many nights her children went to sleep to the sounds of her sewing machine in the kitchen working on a new pattern she merged from different sources. Fellow church-members still remember (and still share) her recipes, many mash-ups (before mash-ups became a thing) she devised from the awesome piles of magazines and books she always had on hand. The ultimate effect was often bewildering, but definitely unique.

Surviving are her 4 children, 6 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson: Verna May Magtibay (Donguines) with granddaughter Loraine and great-grandson Manny; Allan Edwin and grandchildren Melissa, Michael, Madeleine, Megan, and Maribeth; Gail Aguiar (Edwin); and Alvin Edwin.

In memoriam of the happy person we once knew and of love that was, long ago.
