Obituary For Rita Belle Dion

Rita was born January 15, 1921, in Foam Lake Saskatchewan, the first of two daughters to George and Muriel Greenwood, who moved to Vancouver in 1931 to a three story home at Grandview Hwy and Renfrew St. with the first floor being a grocery store that served the local community for many years.

Rita graduated from Britannia High School and then on to Business College, after which she worked at CKWX Radio Station. Riding to work one day she met a handsome young French Canadian by the name of Lomer Dion, and the story of their romance and life together began. She took instructions and embraced the Catholic Faith in preparation for their wedding on November 27, 1941.

Rita gave birth to 11 children over the next 20 years: Sherrill Weeks, Gail Jiles (Steve), Glenn, Steve (Christine), Verne (Sherry), Victor (Marlee), Charlene Askew (Rodger), Leigh (Filomena), Lindsey (Lorene), Dennis (Tina), Peter (Louise). And from these Rita became grandmother to 27 and great grandmother to 36.

Rita loved to sing and was an anchor alto in her parish choirs all her life. She sang with the “Sweet Adelline’s” and the Handel Society of Vancouver for many years. She was also a dedicated volunteer, especially as a life member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada, serving in a variety of leadership roles on the parish and diocesan levels. A highlight for her was being on the central committee for the Papal Visit of Pope John Paul II. She and dad were part of the small group of well-wishers on the airport tarmac when the Pope was leaving. She had a word with him, thanking him for acknowledging the choir at the Mass in Abbotsford.

Rita was an active member of the Surrey Pro Life Society and the Surrey Cancer Society. She was an avid bridge and cribbage player, and loved to travel and visit her family. In her final years she resided at Pacific Carleton Manor, Morgan Heights Residence, and then Evergreen Terraces. She struggled with her memory, but when prompted would name her 11 children all in proper order. The family wish to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff and volunteers who cared for their mom at these places where she resided.

Rita died peacefully on October 24, 2023, with her rosary around her fingers, at the age of 102. Her Funeral Mass will be held at Good Shepherd Church on Monday, November 6 at 11am. Burial at Gardens of Gethsemani Cemetery. Presiding will be her son, Fr. Glenn.

Rita lived a long and purpose filled life, with the pillars of Faith, Family, and Service as the treasures she held dear and for which she dedicated her life.

May she rest in peace.
